The Santa Barbara Foundation is a non-profit public organization...recognized in the acts of the regional government (Decreto Presidente Giunta Regione Calabria n. 1519/86). The foundation’s purposes include creativity, education, administration, preservation, diffusion, and enhancement related to the artistic heritage, architecture, archaeological findings, landscaping, and botany of its unique location. Created by artists Nik Spatari and Hiske Maas, the Santa Barbara Art Foundation plans and executes its programmes and initiatives, including the refinement and completion of the Museum Park Laboratory MuSaBa. Access to the entire environmental an cultural patrimony (which includes material, knowledge, and operating technology) becomes economically feasible of MuSaBa because of the direct and immediate availability of unique resources that in other situation are unavailable or expensive. |
MuSaBa is an open air museum, characterized by the principle of action...and a truly scientific and productive park with a strong interactive programme. Here one has the rare possibility to experience the presence of diverse typologies, whether preserved and restored, in an environmental unique location where ancient values and historical testimony converge. The site’s territorial location, a true historical stratified and sedimentary plateau, and its cultural artefacts orient the visitor to the region, so that MuSaBa is a natural starting point for travelers to Aspromonte National Park. |
The reasons for an Enterprise Nik Spatari e Hiske Maas settled in Santa Barbara in 1970, returning to the region of Nik’s childhood experience. After having experienced the artistic European environments, Nik and Hiske decided to work on a global project involving the production of art in the direct context of its historical points of reference and its natural surroundings. Spatari and Maas responded to the quest for an “integral” place, for a culture immersed and integrated with the environment, for a creativity etched on the earth herself. This MuSaBa initiative was largely inspired by a sense of rebellion against an environment dominated by cultural backwardness and hostile to any innovation. That is why the idea of promoting artistic activities in this area goes well beyond its mere cultural meaning. |
