By linking “Art” with “Environment”, Nik e Hiske designed the essential objectives for their foundation: the realization of the museum park laboratory. The project is a prototype, a creative and environmental complex, an educational process. |
MuSaBa is a work in progress, it involves large parts of the territory, it caries out many different interventions at different times and using different amounts of space; MuSaBa is an evolving structure. It is an ensemble of architecture, sculpture, visual works of art, the Mediterranean Art Garden, the river valley, and an archaeological site. It is a research and educational laboratory open to young and other curious people from all over the world. What must be appreciated about this place is the richness and uniqueness of the architectural part of the project conceived by Spatari and of the Art Garden where Italian and foreign artists have worked for years to create works inseparable from their scenic environment, grounding the artistic content of each piece in function. T he relationship with history, seen as an open and continuing process that is reinterpreted, restored and innovated at each moment in time. The natural context of this environmental project will shelter the essences and symbols that relate to the cultural horizons of the foundation. |
A description of the project The project consists in the restoration and functional adaptation of the ancient monastery Santa Barbara into a fully equipped museum-school-laboratory of contemporary arts that promotes cultural activities through the development and use of art laboratories, museum spaces, visitor’s info centre, editorial services, and multimedia databases. The project includes the completion of residential quarters with annexed art laboratory, the restoration of the railway station for cultural-tourism services and exchanges, and the creation of an information network through multimedia systems and internet. The database will preserve artistic, architectonic, environmental, and archaeological heritage as well as promote data exchange, education, and activities connected to the regional cultural-environmental network and the creation of the environmental-archaeological park Santa Barbara. |
Interpretation of the environment MuSaBa, as an integrated cultural structure, is based on the convergence of interventions, questions, and actions related to the environmental interpretation of the area around the architectonic structures suggested by the remains of the monastery. The restoration, consolidation, and adaptation of these architectural remains will continue to be carried out by using experimental technology that has the least possible effect on the environment by using natural material from the area. Stone and wood will be used for the reintegration of the walls as well as for the completion of the floors and roofs, without the use of any inappropriate material. While respecting the criteria and purpose of integrated conservation, we want to regain the functionality of the historic structures for museum-laboratory, communication and cultural services, reception, and refreshment purposes. The entire complex requires the interaction of all the different activities. |
