“Nik Spatari; un sogno in fieri all’ultima frontiera.

ACTIVITIES
MUSABA-activities are addressed to all kinds of public, focusing, in particular, on students and cultural tourisim; they pivot on stimulating and interactive approach, aiming at activating the participants creativity.
MuSaBa is traditionally a place where young people are trained, and where people who are particularly interested in art, architecture, and environment, can get current information. The experience gained during thirty years of activity makes MUSABA an “international centre par excellence” in its field, capable of offering a practical training through stages and hands-on courses. Spatari and Maas have, since the late nineteen seventies, created a large cultural project that has linked environmental functions to the restoration of the ruins of the Santa Barbara monastic complex, and to experiential art laboratories that are known internationally. The organisation of stages and the cultural exchanges that have taken place with several important American and European universities, has led to an appreciation and knowledge of a fascinating territorial situation. The qualifications of MUSABA’s initiative include the fact that it is not-for-profit and that it continues to achieve its purposes.

Nik and Hiske start work of the entire area surrounding the former monastic complex destined to become a Mediterranean Park and Gardens of Art. They plant hundreds of species of plants and shrubs and widen the pebbly shore of the Torbido stream, by embanking and draining. The ancient olive tree grove is recovered and expanded.
Year by year the park ends up covering an area of about 70,000 square meters enriched with onumental works of art created by international artists.
Art critic Achille Bonito Oliva: “A Foundation should have the function, irony apart, of imposing compulsory presence on artists. In other words, it is not enough to promote exhibitions by transporting paintings and sculptures from one place to another: this would be a reductive function in light of the cultural vacuum existing in the south of the country. If the artist is taken to the land instead, so that his or her work is created in the geographical and cultural context where he or she lives, the work produced will be much more profound and authentic. What makes such a place special is the possibility of presenting to the public works which have not arrived through private galleries, collections and artists, but that are specifically conceived, planned and executed for their exact placing in the Museum itself. For this reason, the Museum aims not only to recuperate the region’s cultural potential, but also to facilitate as far as possible the understanding and diffusion of its new cultural message.”

FAQ
Do Nik Spatari and Hiske Maas live at MUSABA?
Nik and Hiske have been living at MUSABA since 1969.
They organize and manage the work in progress, meet visitors and take a crucial part in the museum park and in the natural space surrounding the area.
How much of the project has been created and financed so far?
This vital project began as a challenge more than forty years ago and the construction of MUSABA (extending on a seven-hectare surface area) has undergone the restoration of the museum laboratory and the creation of the residential area; the unused “Santa Barbara” Calabro-Lucana railroad station transformed into living quarters, office, art laboratory. Adjacent to this the MuSaBaArtHotel was created, in the heart of the surrounding Gardens of Mediterranean Art.
Just like the beginning of the seventies, most of the work has taken place mainly by people without much experience and the materials come from the surrounding grounds and from the river bed nearby. Since the beginning we have been self-financed nearly exclusively through various cultural activities and some contributions from Ministries and the European Union.
Is it possible to draw within the Museum premises?
Pencils, pens and notebooks are allowed. Paints and easels are not allowed.
Is it possible to eat and/or stay at MUSABA?
MuSaBaArtHotel/Foresteria is available to artists, students and adult visitors.
Families
The Museum Laboratory is open to all. Overnight stay at the ArtHotel is not allowed for children/teens under 18.
